A Brazilian translation of Buchi Emecheta’s most popular novel The Joys of Motherhood has just been published in hardback by the Brazilian publisher, Dublinense Ltda.
Buchi Emecheta has a loyal following in Brazil with its African-European heritage. Her books have already appeared in the Portuguese language, but this publication represents the first time Buchi Emecheta’s novels have have been released in Southern America.
The distinctive edition in green lettering, features chapter headings which use the sacred Igbo Ndibisi script as markers, and a genogram on the front cover of the central character, Nnu Ego’s family tree.
Buchi Emecheta’s novels have been translated into more than a dozen different languages, but this, in my opinion, is the most unique and artistically considered production to date. The paperback edition is scheduled to appear later this year.
It is very much hoped that the publisher Gustavo Faraon who with myself has overseen this production, will be present at the Celebrating Buchi Emecheta event taking place at the Brunei Gallery in London on Saturday, February 3rd.
